Jeffrey B. Travis is a Chicagoland Accountant, Business Consultant, Tax Preparer, and Father of Four | Maria, my wife, with me, on a hot summer-day trip approximately two hours distant. Here you see us amidst the breathtaking Matthiessen sunflowers field. Located in La Salle County, about three miles south of Utica on Illinois State Route 178, this park consists of 1,629 acres, 60 dedicated acres of which are planted to fields of yellow sunflowers and managed for dove hunting. A great out-of-the way place for hiking and photos; so well-known and popular, in fact, that professional photography sessions require a filming and activity permit weeks in advance. Seeds were first planted here more than 25 years ago in an effort to attract doves for hunting season. The flowers bloom through July; by August, they begin to seed and wilt through early September, all while attracting pollinators and providing shade for deer, pheasants, opossums and raccoons. Sunflower fields returned to Matthiessen State Park this year after not being planted in Spring 2019 because of the large amount of rain.
